A 45-year-old Breivik, following the verdict, was held separately from other inmates in high-security prisons; in the lawsuit, he claimed that such conditions violated his rights.
He sued the state, claiming that his prolonged isolation was a violation of Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which prohibits inhuman and degrading treatment.
During the hearings held in the sports hall of the «Ringerike» prison for security reasons, Breivik stated that he suffers from depression and is dependent on antidepressants. He accused the authorities of attempting to «push him towards suicide.»
Norwegian authorities argue that the strict but comfortable conditions in which Breivik is held are justified, given the risk he poses to others.
«Breivik has good conditions for detention in prison and relatively large freedom in everyday life,» said Judge Birgitte Kolrud, cited by AFP.
On July 22, 2011, Breivik detonated a bomb near government buildings in Oslo, killing eight people, and then shot 69 more people, mostly teenagers, at a summer camp on the island of Utøya.
