Yesterday, on February 17, flowers were also laid at Solovetsky Stone in Moscow in memory of the late Alexey Navalny by the UK Ambassador to Russia, Nigel Casey.
Actions in memory of Alexey Navalny in Russia and around the world
The news of Alexey Navalny’s death in Correctional Colony IK-3 «Polar Wolf» in the settlement of Kharp in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, announced by the Federal Penitentiary Service on February 16 and later confirmed by his family and associates, sparked a wave of spontaneous actions in memory of Navalny. Not only in Russia but also in other countries, hundreds of people brought flowers to improvised memorials.
In Russia, hundreds of participants in these actions were detained for «disobeying police officers,» «organizing a mass event in violation of public order,» and other «offenses.» As of 2:00 pm on February 18, the human rights portal «OVD-Info» named the names of more than 284 detainees in 34 cities of Russia. According to human rights activists, at least 132 people were detained in , and at least 50 in Moscow.
