Special Prosecutor David Weiss has accused former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov of providing false testimony regarding the involvement of US President Joe Biden and his son Hunter in deals with Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings. In a statement released on Thursday, February 15, Weiss said that 43-year-old Smirnov was arrested the day before at Las Vegas airport upon his return to the US from abroad.
The informant has been charged with two counts, and if found guilty, he could face up to 25 years in prison.
Biden’s Son’s Ties to Burisma
According to the indictment, Alexander Smirnov claimed during the investigation into Hunter Biden in 2020 that the leadership of Burisma in 2015 and 2016 confessed to him that they had hired Joe Biden’s son to «protect the company from various issues» in the US «through his father.» Smirnov also stated that Burisma’s management paid Joe and Hunter Biden $5 million each to «take care of all matters» related to the investigation into the company initiated by the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
