“The European Union is promptly responding to the need to restore security at sea and freedom of navigation in a strategically crucial maritime corridor. This operation will play a key role in ensuring commercial interests and security for the international community», said the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
The ASPIDES operation will provide the EU’s naval presence in the area where since October 2023, the Houthis have been attacking international commercial vessels.
«As part of its defensive mandate, the operation will provide maritime situational awareness, escort ships, and protect them from potential attacks at sea,» the EU reported.
The operation will operate along the major sea lanes of the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and the Strait of Hormuz, as well as in the international waters of the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, and Persian Gulf.
Commodore Vasilios Gripas will be the operation’s commander, while Rear Admiral Stefano Costantino will be the commander of forces. The operation’s headquarters will be based in Larissa.
