This operation will play a key role in ensuring commercial interests and security for the international community&#187;, said the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"C-fragment C-fragment-html C-fragment-html--paragraph\">\n<p>The ASPIDES operation will provide the EU&#8217;s naval presence in the area where since October 2023, the Houthis have been attacking international commercial vessels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"C-fragment C-fragment-html C-fragment-html--paragraph\">\n<p>&#171;As part of its defensive mandate, the operation will provide maritime situational awareness, escort ships, and protect them from potential attacks at sea,&#187; the EU reported.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"C-fragment C-fragment-html C-fragment-html--paragraph\">\n<p>The operation will operate along the major sea lanes of the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and the Strait of Hormuz, as well as in the international waters of the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, and Persian Gulf.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"C-fragment C-fragment-html C-fragment-html--paragraph\">\n<p>Commodore Vasilios Gripas will be the operation&#8217;s commander, while Rear Admiral Stefano Costantino will be the commander of forces.
