According to the Kaunas Fire Safety and Rescue Service, on February 29th at 14:30, a report was received that a ship had sunk near R. Kalantos street, at the pier. The caller stated that oil stains were visible on the water in the Kaunas reservoir, not far from the nursing home. According to the caller, the ship sank near an illegal pier, close to the yacht club.
A diver was sent to the scene, who, after descending underwater, determined the name of the yacht and passed the information to an inspector from the environmental protection service. The inspectors contacted the shipping department of the Maritime Department of the Lithuanian Transport Security Administration to find out who owns the Farandole yacht. They also investigated the ownership of the pier.
It was discovered that the yacht was not registered.
The inspectors continue to search for the owner of the yacht. If they cannot find them, the Kaunas municipality will have to raise the yacht to the surface.
The firefighters determined that the yacht that sank was made of wood. Oil products have leaked into the water, spreading over an area of 3 square kilometers.
