After amending the Law on Restrictive Measures, the consensus-approved provisions were introduced.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Survilas, who presented the legislative proposal, explained the reasons for the proposed extension of sanctions. He noted that the circumstances and geopolitical situation have not changed since last year. Therefore, he emphasized the importance of properly managing potential security risks for the country.
«The aggression continues, innocent civilians are being killed, and civil infrastructure is under attack — you know this very well. Therefore, in response to the ongoing war and the dramatic impact these actions have not only on Ukraine but also on Europe and our security, we are presenting this legislative proposal,» Survilas said from the podium of the plenary hall.
He highlighted the main changes proposed in the amendments introduced by the government. The draft not only proposes extending the restrictions until May 2 of next year but also tightening the screening of Belarusian citizens crossing the Lithuanian border with a Schengen visa. Such individuals will undergo additional evaluation and screening for potential risks. This procedure is already in place for Russian citizens.
